School Parliament: Empowering Pupil Voice and Leadership

At Killisick Junior School, we believe in the importance of pupil voice and actively involve our pupils in decision-making processes through our School Parliament. This initiative empowers pupils to take on leadership roles, fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership over their school environment.

Key Components of the School Parliament

  1. Elected Representatives

    • Each class elects two representatives to serve on the School Parliament, ensuring that every pupil has a voice in the school community.
    • Elections are held at the beginning of the academic year, encouraging pupils to engage in the democratic process and understand the importance of representation.
  2. Regular Meetings

    • The School Parliament meets regularly to discuss issues that affect the school community, share ideas, and propose improvements.
    • Meetings provide a platform for pupils to express their views, voice concerns, and suggest initiatives that enhance school life.
  3. Focus on Continuous Improvement

    • Representatives are tasked with gathering feedback from their classmates, ensuring that the perspectives of all pupils are considered in discussions.
    • The School Parliament plays a crucial role in identifying areas for improvement within the school, such as:
      • Enhancements to the learning environment.
      • Initiatives to promote inclusivity and respect.
      • Suggestions for school events and activities that foster community spirit.
  4. Collaboration with Staff and Leadership

    • The School Parliament works closely with school leaders and staff to implement ideas and initiatives that arise from their discussions.
    • Regular updates are provided to the school leadership team, ensuring that pupil suggestions are taken seriously and acted upon where feasible.
  5. Skill Development

    • Participation in the School Parliament helps pupils develop essential skills, including:
      • Leadership: Pupils learn to lead discussions, make decisions, and represent their peers effectively.
      • Communication: Engaging in discussions and presenting ideas fosters strong verbal and written communication skills.
      • Teamwork: Collaborating with peers and staff promotes a sense of community and teamwork.
  6. Promoting a Positive School Culture

    • The School Parliament contributes to fostering a positive school culture by promoting values such as respect, responsibility, and aspiration.
    • Initiatives led by the School Parliament often focus on enhancing pupil wellbeing, encouraging inclusivity, and celebrating achievements.
  7. Feedback and Reflexion

    • At the end of each term, the School Parliament reflects on its activities and achievements, assessing the impact of their initiatives on the school community.
    • This reflexion process encourages pupils to think critically about their contributions and identify areas for future focus.
