Forest School Programme: Nurturing Growth Through Nature

At Killisick Junior School, we are proud to offer our pupils the enriching experience of our Forest School programme. This initiative is designed to provide all children with regular access to outdoor learning throughout the year, fostering a deep connection with nature. Our Forest School programme not only enhances pupils’ physical skills and environmental awareness but also supports their emotional and social development.

Key Components of the Forest School Programme

  1. Hands-On Learning Experiences
Pupils engage in a variety of activities that promote exploration and discovery, including:

    • Nature Walks: Guided excursions to observe and identify local flora and fauna, encouraging curiosity about the environment.
    • Wildlife Observation: Learning about ecosystems by observing animals and insects in their natural habitats.
    • Seasonal Changes: Understanding the impact of seasons on the environment through direct observation and participation in seasonal activities.
  2. Skill Development
The programme focuses on developing essential life skills, such as:

    • Teamwork and Collaboration: Pupils work together on group projects, fostering communication and cooperation.
    • Problem-Solving: Engaging in challenges, such as building shelters or navigating natural obstacles, encourages critical thinking and creativity.
    • Risk Assessment: Learning to assess and manage risks in a safe outdoor environment promotes independence and confidence.
  3. Emotional and Social Growth
The Forest School experience is designed to nurture emotional intelligence and social skills:

    • Confidence Building: Children are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones, leading to increased self-esteem and resilience.
    • Mindfulness and Wellbeing: Activities like quiet reflexion, nature art, and sensory exploration promote mental wellbeing and mindfulness.
    • Connection with Peers: Shared experiences in nature help build friendships and a sense of belonging.
  4. Integration with Curriculum
The Forest School programme complements the academic curriculum by:

    • Enhancing Science Learning: Pupils learn about plant biology, ecosystems, and environmental science through hands-on experiences.
    • Vocabulary Development: Engaging in discussions about their observations helps to expand pupils’ vocabulary and language skills.
    • Cross-Curricular Links: Activities can be linked to subjects such as art, geography, and physical education, making learning holistic and interconnected.
  5. Pathway 2 Nurture and Wellbeing Programme
As part of our Pathway 2 Nurture and Wellbeing Programme, the Forest School serves as a targeted intervention for pupils who may benefit from additional support. This includes:

    • Tailored Activities: Specific sessions designed to address individual needs, focusing on emotional regulation and social skills.
    • Supportive Environment: A nurturing setting where pupils can express themselves freely and build trust with peers and staff.

We believe that by engaging with nature, our pupils can thrive both academically and personally, setting them on a path to lifelong learning and wellbeing. The Forest School programme is an integral part of our commitment to providing unrivalled personal development and collective responsibility in nurturing every child’s potential.
